Four members of Vernon Ski Club heading to Alpine U16 Nationals

Skiers heading to nationals

A quartet of Vernon skiers will be taking on the best Canada has to offer next week.

Vernon Ski Club is sending four skiers to the Alpine U16 Nationals Championships in Mont Tremblant, Que.

Camryn Steele, Coen Gill, Tylee Carr, and Jasmine Coubrough will be competing in giant slalom, super G, and slalom followed by a skills assessment which will be done on dry land.

The club's Lauren Carr says B.C. will be sending 14 male and 14 female athletes to the national event.

“They are training until Saturday, and we are all leaving on Sunday,” says Carr.

The Vernon Ski Club has 106 members, so to send four of them to such a prestigious event is quite an accomplishment, she says.

To make the nationals, the local skiers competed at two qualifying events at Silver Star Mountain and Sun Peaks near Kamloops.

“They are a strong group of skiers, and they are going to keep going, it looks like,” Carr said of the young athletes.

The nationals are being held March 28 to April 3.

“This is an incredible opportunity for some incredible kids. They will be representing British Columbia as part of Team BC at Canadian U16 National Championships, which is an extremely inspiring, competitive, and fun event. Putting yourself in a position to go up against the best of your age group in Canada is a privilege and believe me, these kids have earned it. BC Alpine is extremely proud of this group and hope to see many of them working towards representing Canada one day,” said Johnny Crichton, BC Alpine vice-president.
