Former Vernon and Coldstream administrator and politician Cecil Dirk dead at 95

Former councillor passes

A former Vernon and Coldstream administrator and politician has passed.

Cecil Dirk died Oct. 26. He was 95 years old.

Dirk worked for the City of Vernon for 29 years, starting in 1956.

He began as an accountant and progressed to become deputy treasurer, collector, city treasurer, and acting chief administrative officer.

He worked with nine different mayors and 53 city councillors.

After retiring, Dirk was elected to Coldstream council in the 1980s.

He also served on the board of directors for the Halina Centre, O'Keefe Ranch, and Vernon Resthome.

Dirk was born Aug. 11, 1926, in Prelate, Sask.

After serving in the Second World War, he met and married Barbara Lee Tait in Meota, Sask. They settled in Vernon in 1953.

Dirk worked for the Bay and then as a bookkeeper for the original Kal Tire shop before joining the city.

He also coached minor baseball in Coldstream and as a member of Coldstream’s recreation commission advocated for neighbourhood tennis courts and the outdoor swimming pool in Lavington.

Dirk is survived by his wife Barbara, sons Doug and Bruce, daughters Jane and Elaine, 12 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren, along with two sisters.
