Vernon RCMP remind public to secure property with 9PM Routine

Time to keep out crime

It's 9 p.m. ... is your property safe?

North Okanagan RCMP are reminding residents to make crime prevention a habit by taking part in the "9PM Routine."

Originally launched by the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office and now adopted across North America, the routine is a crime-prevention strategy aimed at reducing and preventing property crime.

“Thefts from homes and motor vehicles are often crimes of opportunity with thieves taking advantage of unsecured doors and windows to steal valuables left unattended or out in plain view,” says Const. Chris Terleski.

“The campaign encourages residents to make it a habit to conduct security checks in their homes and vehicles each evening at 9 p.m. to ensure they are secure.”

  • Remove spare keys, garage door openers, electronics and other valuables from vehicles
  • Ensure home and vehicle doors and windows are shut and locked
  • Put away and secure all items around your home
  • Secure your shed and outbuildings

“Leaving valuables in plain sight in your vehicle or around your home is an open invitation for someone to steal them,” says Terleski.

“Don’t make yourself an easy target. By taking part in the 9PM Routine and securing your property you are making a significant contribution to reducing and preventing this type of crime in our community.”
