Charges laid in homicide

Charges have been laid in relation to a shooting incident Monday in Spallumcheen that left one person dead.

The BC Prosecution Service approved a charge, Tuesday, of second-degree murder against 46-year-old Jevon Daniel Smith of Spallumcheen.

Just after 11:30 a.m. Monday, RCMP received a report of a possible shooting and vehicle fleeing the area of Back Enderby Road in Spallumcheen.

Officers discovered a dead body on the 4500 block.

A police helicopter was brought in to search for the suspect vehicle, and the Southeast District Emergency Response Team assisted in taking the suspect into custody near Armstrong.

“This investigation developed quickly from a very dynamic and dangerous situation, and its speedy result can only be attributed to the effective co-ordination between the Vernon/North Okanagan RCMP, RCMP Air Services, the Southeast District Emergency Response Team and the Southeast District Major Crime Unit,” Sgt. Janelle Shoihet of the BC RCMP said in a press release.

Anyone who had contact with Smith in the hours preceding the incident is asked to contact the Southeast District Major Crime unit at 1-877-987-8477.
