Residents tackled fire with garden hoses in Vernon neighbourhood

'Scary fire' on East Hill

Residents in the Silver Star Elementary area are on edge after a fire in the East Hill neighbourhood of Vernon Tuesday night.

A post on the Vernon & Area Community Forum Wednesday morning said: “Last night on East Hill, we had a very scary fire set by people outside between two properties. The homeowners heard people walking and laughing ... seconds later, they saw the flames. All the dry grasses and shrubs were on fire. Ten feet high. Neighbours went out with hoses until the FD got here.”

City of Vernon spokesperson Christy Poirier says Vernon Fire Rescue Services was dispatched about 10:30 p.m. to a report of a grass fire on the 1500 block of 38th Avenue.

“Upon arrival, firefighters found a smouldering grass fire that was approximately 4x15 feet in size,” Poirier said in an email.

Residents in the area had already extinguished most of the fire with garden hoses, and then firefighters doused the rest of the area to confirm the fire was out.

No injuries were reported, and no structures were damaged.

“The city is grateful that all residents are safe and sound, and VFRS thanks the residents for paying keen attention to activity in their neighbourhood so action could be taken quickly,” Poirier added.

RCMP attended the scene, and Cpl. Tania Finn says the cause is undetermined.
