Vernon Fire Rescue hazmat team called to Lumby pool for chemical incident

Lumby 'chemical incident'

UPDATE 2:37 p.m.

The Oval Park at 1815 Glencaird Street, the White Valley Community Centre at 2250 Shields in Lumby have reopened after a precautionary closure was implemented at 9 am on July 14. A brief evacuation alert placed on nearby residences has been rescinded. The Lumby Branch of the Okanagan Regional Library will reopen tomorrow morning for regular hours.

The Lumby Spray Park and Pool at 1815 Glencaird Street, will remain closed out of an abundance of caution as Village staff monitor the water chemistry. It is expected that the spray park and pool will reopen at regular operational times July 15.

“We thank emergency personnel for their quick response and will review our operational procedures to identify ways to avoid a situation like this from occurring again,” said Tom Kadla, Chief Administrative Officer, Village of Lumby.

UPDATE 1:32 p.m.

The chemical incident that forced the evacuation of an area around the Lumby pool Wednesday was not chlorine related.

That from Lumby Fire Department Chief Tony Clayton.

Clayton said a worker at the pool accidentally mixed two chemicals together that caused them to feel ill.

Clayton said the area was evacuated and the VFRS hazmat team were called to err on the side of caution until crews knew what they were dealing with.

An official with Monashee Mews said the facility, which was near the incident, was not evacuated, but staff had a plan in place in case it was necessary to do so.

UPDATE 12:35 p.m.

The chemical incident in Lumby is over and fire crews have left the scene.

UPDATE: 10:10 a.m.

The Village of Lumby has closed a number of facilities due to a potential chemical exposure.

Chief administrative officer Tom Kadla says Oval Park, the White Valley Community Centre, Okanagan Regional Library branch, Lumby Spray Park, and Lumby Pool are all temporarily closed while the incident is investigated.

They will remain closed until further notice.

"While opening the park for the day and performing their routine maintenance operations, a Lumby staff member reported feeling unwell while handling chemicals, and is en route to the hospital for further observation," says Kadla.

The Lumby and District Fire Department is on scene.

"The area has been secured, with no public access permitted. There is no risk to the public at this time, and emergency responders are on site responding to the call. We will work closely with emergency responders in investigating incident," says Kadla.

Vernon Fire Rescue Services' hazmat team has been called to an incident in Lumby.

There are unconfirmed reports of a chlorine leak near the pool.

Lumby Fire Chief Tony Clayton said a “chemical incident” has happened, but could not elaborate.

“It's not the swimming pool itself, but it is in the swimming pool, curling rink community hall area,” said Clayton, adding people are being asked to stay away from the area.

An area around the incident has been closed off, and Clayton said the immediate area has been evacuated.

There are unconfirmed reports a long-term care site is also being evacuated.

Monashee Mews is a 46-bed long-term care facility at 2165 Norris Ave., across from the pool, which is on Glencaird Street.

Castanet will have more information as soon as it becomes available.
