Crews rush to new wildfire above Swan Lake on Monday, north of Vernon

Swan Lake fire 1.2 hectares

UPDATE: 5:40 a.m.

The BC Wildfire Service dashboard now maps the wildfire that started Monday above the north end of Swan Lake at 1.2 hectares in size.

We will have more information as it becomes available this morning.


UPDATE: 9:15 p.m.

BC Wildfire and Armstrong Spallumcheen Fire crews will remain on scene into the evening at a fire near Greenbow Creek north of Vernon.

In a brief news release Monday evening, the township says it will provide a further update in the morning.

Updates will be provided on the Township’s Website at www.spallumcheentwp.bc.ca.

Please respect working crews, signage and traffic barriers at all times and use caution when traveling Township Roads.

At last report, the fire was slightly less than a hectare in size.


UPDATE: 6:25 p.m.

The Township of Spallumcheen says the small wildfire burning near the Spallumcheen-BX border has grown to nearly a hectare in size.

A short news release early Monday evening says the fire has grown to 0.9 hectares.

Both the BC Wildfire and Armstrong Spallumcheen Fire services are on scene.

Castanet reporter Jon Manchester says smoke from the fire has not grown, and appears relatively thin.

The township says it will update the fire later this evening.


UPDATE: 5:51 p.m.

The Township of Spallumcheen has been notified that there is a tactical evacuation alert near the Wildfire located north east of Greenhow Road.

Armstrong Spallumcheen Fire Department is preparing to provide structure support for those homes that are on alert for tactical evacuation.

Updates will be provided on the Township’s Website at www.spallumcheentwp.bc.ca.

Residents are asked to respect working crews, signage and traffic barriers at all times and use caution when traveling Township Roads.


UPDATE 5:44 p.m.

A bird dog and tanker have now arrived on the scene of a new fire located northeast of Greenhow Road by Swan lake.

Castanet regional editor Jon Manchester is on the scene and he indicates the area near the fire is filled with rural acreages and estate homes.


UPDATE 4:45 p.m.

The Town of Spallumcheen says the fire is located north east of Greenhow Road.

The municipality says it has activated its emergency operations centre and is assessing the situation as it unfolds.

“Any progression of this incident will be related to winds causing concern to local area residents,” the township said in a news release,

Armstrong Spallumcheen Fire Department has responded and is providing support to BC Wildfire, which is hitting the fire from the sky with helicopters and tankers.


UPDATE 4:35 p.m.

Helicopters are bucketing a new fire start in the hills above the north end of Swan Lake.

A fixed-wing tanker and bird dog are also circling the area.

The fire is described as just larger than a spot fire and is putting off an increasing amount of smoke.

Local fire departments are mobilizing on the road below, but the fire is burning some distance up the hillside.


ORIGINAL 4:20 p.m.

A new wildfire has started in the hills above the north end of Swan Lake in Vernon.

Multiple fire departments are responding.

Castanet also has a reporter en route and will update.
