Double-rotor military Chinook helicopter touches down in Vernon en route to help wildfire response in Kamloops

Big bird flies into town

UPDATE: 4:55 p.m.

A CH-147 Royal Canadian Air Force Chinook helicopter that touched down in Vernon Thursday was en route to Kamloops to aid in wildfire emergency support.

Capt. Ken Jacobson with 1 Canadian Air Division headquarters in Winnipeg tells Castanet the big chopper was briefly in Vernon, where members conducted an inspection of the Vernon Cadet Camp before continuing on their way to Kamloops.

The flight was in support of Operation Lentus, which is the Canadian Armed Forces' response to natural disasters in Canada.

The military deployed forces on July 4 as part of the operation to support local efforts in the emergency response to wildfires in B.C.

Forces will be in the province until July 19, according to a federal government website update on the operation.

"Personnel and air assets are positioned to provide airlift to transport personnel and equipment into and out of areas affected by fires and provide emergency airlift for evacuation purposes, if required," the post states.

"The CAF is also prepared to provide airlift to support broader evacuation efforts, as well as ground-based resources to support logistics, sustainment and firefighting activities."

It's not every day you see a double-rotor military Chinook helicopter land in Vernon.

Brad Steel captured video of one of the big birds taking off from the sports fields on the Department of National Defence grounds across from the Vernon Army Cadet Training Centre on Thursday.

What the Chinook was doing in town is not yet known, but there's no doubt the big chopper made an impressive appearance that caught the attention of many.

Castanet has reached out to the Canadian Armed Forces for more information.

A spokesperson at the cadet camp said only that the Chinook was passing through and made a brief pit stop.

Some years ago, the military used to bring Chinook teams to Vernon to practise mountain flying in the Monashees, east of the city.

Earlier this year, the Canadian Special Operations Forces Command conducted training in the region with smaller Griffon helicopters.
