Referendum on Vernon Active Living Centre to coincide with 2022 municipal election

Rec referendum set

Vernon residents will vote on a new Active Living Centre next year.

Vernon city council approved plans on Monday for a referendum in conjunction with the Oct. 15, 2022, municipal election.

Putting the two votes together will save the city $90,000 to $100,000.

Initially, a referendum was considered for September of this year, but that date was pushed back as the planning process continues to develop.

In a further motion, council asks that the District of Coldstream and Electoral Areas B & C consider financial involvement in the project.

The referendum would ask voters to borrow up to $90 million for construction of the facility.

The rec centre would be located on the former Kin Race Track lands.

It would include 50-metre and recreational pools, an indoor running and walking track, double gymnasium, fitness centre and more.
