IIO looking into incident in which man was hurt during 2019 Falkland arrest

Falkland arrest investigated

The Independent Investigations Office of BC is investigating an incident in Falkland in which a man was injured during an arrest.

Information provided by the RCMP shows that on Dec. 3, 2019, about 9:40 a.m., police located a vehicle near the 5600 block of Highway 97 that was associated to two individuals with outstanding warrants.

As police had attempted to stop the vehicle the previous day without success, members of the Southeast District Emergency Response Team were called to assist.

The male driver was arrested with the help of a police dog and sustained what was initially believed to be a minor injury. A female passenger was arrested without incident.

On March 12, 2021, RCMP were advised the man may have sustained a serious injury during the arrest.

The IIO was notified on April 26 and launched an investigation.

The IIO is asking anyone with relevant information of the incident to call its witness line toll-free at 1-855-446-8477 or use the contact form on the IIO website.

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
