New seniors project in Lumby will alleviate 2-page waiting list

Excited for new housing

New affordable housing announced last week for Lumby will alleviate a two-page waiting list for homes for seniors in the community.

Excitement is building for the 20-unit project announced by the province in conjunction with the Lumby & District Senior Citizens Housing Society and Village of Lumby.

"The last time I spoke with the president of the society, she advised me that they have a two-page waiting list. After learning this, council met with staff to work on providing property to assist the society in filling this much-needed gap in our housing for seniors," says Mayor Kevin Acton.

"Seniors in Lumby have had a challenging time finding a place to call home that is affordable and accessible," Vernon-Monashee MLA Harwinder Sandhu added in a press release announcing the project.

Housing society president Elinor Warner adds: "These homes are needed, and we look forward to the completion of the project."

The society was incorporated in 1974 with the goal of developing a low-cost facility for seniors that would allow them to remain in the community they helped to build.

The society became a registered charity in 1996 and has been running the 40-unit Saddle Mountain Place ever since.

It also manages Monashee Place for BC Housing, with 16 units for seniors and those with disabilities.

The new units will be on Shields Avenue, beside Saddle Mountain Place.

The project has not yet reached the design phase.
