Enderby, Spallumcheen, Armstrong seek meeting with province over Highway 97A

Hwy 97A concerns raised

Enderby officials are requesting a joint meeting with the Township of Spallumcheen, City of Armstrong and provincial government to discuss Highway 97A concerns.

A report to Enderby council by chief administration officer Tate Bengston outlines recommendations to improve speed, access and congestion on the highway.

Council will discuss today whether to send a letter to Rob Fleming, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure, requesting the meeting.

Mayor Greg McCune recently met with the mayors of Armstrong and Spallumcheen to discuss shared highway concerns.

The objective is to “support co-ordination of the Highway 97A and rail-trail planning processes at the technical and policy levels to ensure positive outcomes for Enderby,” Bengston writes.

“While the ministry-led process is intended to identify the long-term alignment for the expansion of Highway 97A through the City of Enderby, it is anticipated that this process will identify a set of shorter-term corridor management strategies, for which the values of speed, access and congestion should be addressed to the extent that is feasible, given the existing challenges,” he wrote.

The meeting with Fleming is expected to be virtual.
