Dash cam records close call on Highway 6 near Vernon

Scary highway incident

It is a moment Leia Morris will likely not soon forget.

The North Okanagan woman was driving along Highway 6 heading into Vernon late Wednesday afternoon when she narrowly missed an oncoming truck that had crossed the centre line.

In dash cam video Morris posted to Facebook, the oncoming truck can be seen careening into her lane.

Morris said she was moving to the inside lane as she was preparing to turn off the highway and had she not changed lanes when she did, she likely would have been struck head on.

“Scared the crap out of me,” said the new mother who was heading into town to get some baby formula and food.

Morris said she turned around in an effort to find the driver.

There was no sign of the vehicle, but Morris said she spoke to a couple at the nearby 7-Eleven store on Middleton Way who saw a man passed out in the driver's seat of a similar-looking truck.

The couple knocked on the window to see if the driver was OK, waking the man, who then sped off.

Morris couldn't confirm it was the same vehicle, but hopes somebody will recognize the truck from the video.

“Hoping someone may have witnessed this and has the licence plate of the truck,” she said.

The incident happened at 4:40 p.m. Wednesday, near the intersection of Middleton Way and Highway 6.

“That’s soooo terrifying, such a close call. God I wish that person was caught!! Thankfully nothing happened,” wrote one commenter on Facebook.

Added another: “Holy Cow! So glad that it didn't go as bad as it could have. Good job keeping it together.”
