Markus Frind planting 30 acres at North Okanagan vineyard

'Plenty of planting'

Tech mogul Markus Frind has a vision to make the North Okanagan a wine hotspot.

The owner of West Kelowna's Frind Estate Winery has started planting 30 acres of cabernet sauvignon in Vernon.

Founder of the hugely popular Internet Dating site Plenty of Fish, Frind purchased hundreds of acres of land south of Bella Vista Road, and over the past few months, residents have been watching as major work is being done in the area.

“Vernon is one of the hottest areas in the Valley and perfect aspect and slope for grapes. Overlooked by nearly everyone, we found this gem though our large network of weather stations,” said a post on the Frind Estate Winery Facebook page.

Wine expert and blogger John Schreiner spoke with Frind about the project that will change the face of the wine industry in the North Okanagan.

“I have got 900 acres up there,” Frind told Schreiner. “I started buying about two years ago. I have 23 weather stations up there, and I also have access to historical data, going back 17, 18 years. The entire area is 50 to 100 growing degree days warmer than the Summerland Research Station.”

Until now, the large parcel of land has been used as pasture, but Frind's research, and vision for the south-facing slopes, is transforming them into a world-class vineyard.

Becoming a wine guru is a natural step for Frind, who was born in Germany but moved to B.C. when he was five years old. According to his bio, Frind's family has been in farming and winemaking for more than 500 years.
