For the first time since 1919, no Falkland Stampede

COVID cancels stampede

For the first time in more than 100 years there will be no stampede in Falkland.

The annual event was supposed to take place over the May long weekend, but organizers bumped it down to late summer due to the COVID-19 situation.

Organizers shifted the stampede to Aug. 28-30 with the hope the pandemic would be at a stage that would allow such an event, but on Thursday July 23 it was announced that one of the oldest stampedes in the nation would not be taking place in 2020.

“It is with heavy hearts that we announce the postponement of the 102nd Falkland Stampede. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the Falkland Community Association is unable to produce the high quality show we are proud of,” said a post on the stampede Facebook page.

“This will be the first year the small town of Falkland has not seen a stampede since its inception in 1919, however we look forward to our best year yet in 2021.”
