Footage from late '50s shows diver working in Okanagan Lake

Mystery diver in OK. Lake

Today's mystery reel dates back to the late 1950s.

Vernon historian and videographer Francois Arseneault has unearthed footage from 1958 that features a commercial diver working somewhere in Okanagan Lake.

And Arseneault would like to know who, where and why the diving was taking place.

“It's possible around Kelowna in 1958,” said Arseneault, noting some of the footage shows a rail spur up the lakeshore that was “most likely a lake barge transfer point which once were a common sight on many of B.C.'s large lakes. Until being replaced by transport trucks, tugs manoeuvred barge traffic up and down Okanagan Lake.”

The diver in the grainy black and white footage appears to be operating a hydraulically-powered saw operated by someone on shore.

Anyone with information on the footage is asked to leave a comment on Arseneault's  Reel Life Youtube page.
