The broomball tournament begins for the Vernon Winter Carnival

Bout of the brooms

Sweeping can be a tedious household chore, but throw in a ball and 9 other people, it can make for some fast-paced fun.

The broomball tournament is officially underway as part of the festivities for the Vernon Winter Carnival. The Village Green Hotel is playing host for all three games, from the opening game on Wednesday through to the finals on Friday.

"We have a mammoth parking area here so we figured why not be a part of it," says Peter Kaz, the events manager for the Village Green. "It's a fun event with some good friendly competition."

Broomball has had a resurgence in recent years, but it was really popular in the 80's when they would host games in the middle of main street. There are only four teams competing and there weren't too many spectators, but there are hopes that the broomball tournament can return to its former glory.

"We may consider next year doing it later in the afternoon so that it's easier for people to participate or come watch," Kaz says.

Tomorrow the City of Vernon team will face off against the Davidson Lawyers team to battle it out for a shot at the finals.
