Balloon lands in Rona lumber yard in Anderson Subdivision

Hot air balloon drops in

UPDATE 11:39 a.m.

Although the Balloon Fiesta was cancelled this year due to a lack of sponsorship, Vernon Tourism had two media flights planned with the local hot air balloon company to promote the North Okanagan beauty.

A press release from Okanagan Ballooning said, “Our flight ascended from the Walmart area of Vernon, with the light and variable winds carrying the pilot and passengers over a frozen Swan Lake.
“As wind does, it changed direction and carried the balloon back into town. There was a great open space in the Rona parking lot. The crew ensured the area was clear and safe before the balloon landed and the balloon descended into the open space perfectly. There was no issue with fuel. The spot was chosen based on wind direction and speed.”

While the annual Balloon Fiesta may have been grounded this year, one intrepid hot air balloonist took the the skies over the North Okanagan.

A lone balloon was seen floating over the north end of Vernon Saturday morning, but witnesses tell Castanet it made an unscheduled landing.

“A hot air balloon landed in Rona Vernon's lumber yard at 10:15 a.m. this morning,” said Evan Hodson. “From what I understand they ran out of fuel. Everyone is safe, no one got hurt.”
