12-pound dog seriously injured in Armstrong attack

Small dog viciously mauled

Little Fynn is fighting for his life after being viciously mauled this week.

The two-year-old Bichon dog was found bleeding heavily in a snowbank in Armstrong on Monday.

Liesa Herdman Smith says it's not known how the small dog got out of the yard, or exactly what attacked him, but according to veterinarian, the bites look like a large dog, as the teeth marks are too far apart for a coyote.

“We cannot say 100 per cent for sure (it wasn't a coyote), but he was found lying in the snow, and if it were a coyote, they would have taken him,” she said.

Fynn was severely injured in the attack, suffering damage to his throat and two broken vertebrae in his neck.

Since news of the attack on the 12-pound pooch was posted to the Armstrong Community Forum page, there has been an outpouring of support for Fynn and Smith.

“Fynn is our pet, he's our baby,” said Smith, who started a Gofundme page to raise money for the medical procedures needed to keep Fynn alive.

“We have been waiting for the swelling to go down in his neck enough to get new X-rays to see the extent of damage to his throat. The good news is he has stopped bleeding through his nose and mouth. After reading the X-rays, radiologist have found that he has crushed the hyoid bone. Research needs to be done to see if it needs to be repaired surgically or can he function without it,” said Smith.

“Still waiting to hear the results from the orthopaedic surgeon on the fractured vertebrae in his neck.

Smith said she is touched by the outpouring of support. “They are just wonderful,” she said.

The full cost of helping Fynn recover is not yet known, but it could be in the thousands of dollars.
