The 3 winners of RDNO's Waste Reduction Grant

Go green, get green

Going green can earn you some green, all while helping the environment in the process. There were three winners of the Regional District of North Okanagan's Waste Reduction Grant, all of which helped make our community a little bit greener.

The Food Action Society of the North Okanagan was awarded $6,155 for implementing three compost bins in Vernon and Coldstream at community gardens. Along with being used to compost organic materials, they also serve as educational and inspirational tools for the public on composting.

$3,000 was given to the Interior Provincial Exhibition for their Organic Waste Diversion program. That program diverted 20,668 pounds of organic waste from landfills, and also provided insight to the public on what can be composted and the process involved in food scraps collection.

Vernon Secondary School received $2,500 from the grant to have their onsite mechanical composting machine fixed. The machine is used to process large quantities of food scraps, which is needed in a school setting with lots of students. The unit also teaches students about soil biology, resource management and nutrient cycling.
