Vernon's Schubert Centre struggles with financial challenges

Hard times for senior centre

It has been a gathering place for Vernon seniors since the doors opened in 1984, but Vernon's Schubert Centre is experiencing some financial challenges.

The centre is currently $290,000 in debt and in need of a new HVAC system that will cost another $180,000.

And that debt load is raising some concerns for the future of the popular place.

Diane Weaver, board of directors president, said there is a “very real danger” the centre may be forced to close - but that will not happen without a fight.

“Seniors are really important to this place and to the community of Vernon and we are going to make sure that doesn't happen,” said Weaver.

Shirley Higgins, centre manager, said staff and volunteers will do everything they can to keep the centre open.

“We are in a deficit and we need to raise funds to keep our doors open at this time,” said Higgins, adding the centre has been operating at a deficit for “a few years now and we have accumulated a lot of debt.”

“We have some short and long-term plans that we are not discussing at this time, but they are in the works and we are working with quite a few professionals in the community and they are supporting us in our endeavours to get things back on track.”

To add to the strain, staff and guests at the downtown seniors' facility have been bundling up while in Schubert Centre because the furnace is on its last legs.

But an upcoming fundraiser will go toward a new heating and cooling system.

On Friday, Jan. 24 the Schubert Furnace Fundraiser will provide an evening of fun and entertainment while raising money for a new HVAC system.

The evening will include a dinner, live entertainment, a silent auction and more.

Kalamalka Rotary is the first to step up and support the Schubert Furnace Fundraiser by donating $9,800 from the proceeds of the 2019 Kalamalka Rotary Dream Auction.

Tickets are $125 each, with a $75 tax receipt issued for each ticket purchased.

Higgins said people can also support Schubert Centre in a variety if ways such as:

  • Make a donation
  • Purchase a $50 membership, open to all ages
  • Book a corporate meeting or event
  • Utilize our catering services
  • Rent our tour bus
  • Enjoy a hot lunch Monday to Friday in the Schubert Cafeteria
