Changes to ALR will take affect Feb. 22

Changes are coming to the Agricultural Land Reserve.

By Feb. 22, secondary residences within the ALR in the Regional District of North Okanagan will have to apply to the ALC and local government to build a secondary dwelling.

Last year, provincial regulations changed for properties within the ALR.

One of the major changes is that new secondary residences for a member of the property owner’s immediate family (manufactured or mobile homes) are going to be prohibited after Feb. 22.

Anyone planning on installing a secondary dwelling for family in the ALR in Lumby, Spallumcheen or any of the electoral areas, must have a permit before Feb. 22.

Applications must be in 30 days prior, meaning time is running out to make the Jan. 23 deadline.

There are multiple new regulations regarding existing and new residential buildings, including moving soil and fill material. As these provincial regulations continue to change, it is best to speak with either Agricultural Land Commission staff or RDNO planning and building staff before making an application, starting construction, non-agricultural uses, or moving soil on ALR Land.
