Independent Living Vernon celebrates people with challenges

Artistic ability on display

Day of Persons With Disabilities was celebrated at Independent Living Vernon Tuesday with an art show.

Organizer Crystal Williams, an outreach worker with ILV, said to celebrate the day, the group, which operates out of the People Place, is holding a week-long art show.

The theme of the day is The Future is Accessible.

Williams said society in general has come a long way in helping people with mental and physical challenges, but there is still work to be done.

“There is always barriers to people with disabilities that need to be addressed and that is going to be going on for a long time,” she said. “But I think with the new accessibility act in place there is more recognition of the barriers that are out there and that need to be overcome in order to make peiople with disabilities feel more welcome and secure in the country.”

Independent Living Vernon has numerous programs for people with challenges including peer groups, youth groups, assistance with things like getting a handicap placard, filing taxes and a wealth of other services.
