Vernon bus rider concerned senior wasn't provided assistance

Off the bus, on your own

A Vernon man is concerned about a situation he witness on a BC Transit bus earlier this week.

Dean Roosevelt was on a city bus when it stopped at Lakeshore Drive and Okanagan Landing Road where an elderly gentleman got off.

“He needed assistance. I helped him stand up to get out of his seat,” said Roosevelt, adding the man had several blocks to walk to his final destination and seemed disoriented.

Roosevelt said the bus driver was upset with the situation and radioed management, but Roosevelt claims the manager said unless it was an urgent wellness issue the drivers would have to take care of it themselves.

“Reluctantly, they let him off at the corner and they literally had to point in the direction of Smith Road where he was going,” said Roosevelt, who felt the situation should have been handled differently.

He said management should have taken control of the situation and helped the senior out.

Roosevelt said he has brought other concerns to BC Transit management in the past, but felt this incident should have been dealt with immediately.

“It was really scary,” said Roosevelt, adding the man was coherent, but was somewhat confused about the direction he needed to go after he got off the bus.

Jonathon Dyck with BC Transit said he cannot speak of the specific incident directly due to confidentiality concerns, but said the safety of riders is paramount for BC Transit.

“We work hard to try and provide customers with the best information that we possibly can and of customers do have concerns we urge them contact their local office or fill out a comment form at bctransit.com,” said Dyck.

“We do have a variety of customers who do have different experiences on the bus and that have different needs, so we work hard and try and match that attention. If we are not able to meet that experience we do apologize to customers,” said Dyck. “If we do receive a complaint, we do a review of that complaint and work hard to improve our services and see what we can do.”

Dyck said he does not believe an official complaint was filed over the incident.
