One of the wonderful things about living in the Okanagan is the lakes.
But for those with mobility issues, it is almost impossible to head out onto the big blue for a cruise – almost.
A program through the Okanagan Quality Life Society takes seniors and those with mobility challenges onto Okanagan Lake for a one-hour tour.
The pontoon boat Heaven Can Wait II has several experienced captains who volunteer their time and often make several trips a day onto the water.
One of those captains is Frits Van Dyl and he enjoys taking people out as much as they enjoy going out.
“It's just a pleasure getting to see these people when they come out from their care facility and come out on the boat for an hour,” said Van Dyl. “They look forward to it and we look forward to it also. I do feel good seeing the smiles in their faces.”
Many of the passengers are long time area residents who have not been on the water for years.
“It's all run by donation,” said Van Dyl.
