History rolls into camp

For the first time since the Second World War, a tracked Bren Gun Carrier rumbled through the Vernon Army Camp.

The piece of military history was in town Saturday for a one-day show featuring several pieces of Second World War and post war machinery.

Members of the Western Command brought seven vintage military vehicles that are on display until 4 p.m.

Francois Arseneault, who operates the military museum at the cadet camp, said the display is free and is a good chance to see some fully restored vintage vehicles “we typically don't see very often.

“We are celebrating the (Okanagan Military) Tattoo so we have a lot of our cadets down there and we thought we would give a bit of a show with these World War Two and post World War Two vehicles.
“This is the first time the Bren Gun Carrier and the F.A.T, the field artillery truck, have driven through the camp since World War Two.”

Visitors wanting to check out the vehicles can park on the west side of Highway 97 and walk through the tunnel to get up close to the vehicles.

Arseneault said the show of vehicles is a one-day event, but there is a chance another one could be held at a later date.

The Okanagan Military Tattoo is being held at Kal Tire Place at 7 p.m. tonight and 2 p.m. Sunday.

The popular event features hundreds of performers, including the Brentwood Imperial Youth Band, from Sussex, England.

Returning this year after a two-year absence, is the popular 170-member – and newly crowned World Champions - Calgary Round-Up Band.

And more than 100 cadets from the Vernon Cadet Training Centre will be performing.
