That's one big rubber band

What do you get when you have a box full tiny rubber bands, two good friends and a lot of time on their hands?

You get a big rubber band that can easily cover the length of a football field – before it is even stretched out.

Exavier Roberts and Marshall Pittman estimate they used more than 6,000 tiny rubber bands to make the big rubber band that will stretch out to some 450 feet.

Is that a world record?

They are not sure.

“We saw a Youtube video where there was one that was 300 feet long,” said Roberts. “By the end of Grade 7 we will try to make it go all the way around Alexis Park (school).”

Pittman said they have a 30 to 40-minute bus ride to and from school everyday where they would work on their creation.

“One day he (Exavier) made one that was long so we said 'Hey let's see how we can do this' and it got to the point it was super long and we kept doing it,” said Pittman.

“It was something to do,” added Roberts.

Their classmates also got the band bug and started making creations of their own.

“We're the ones that technically started the trend at our school,” said Roberts.

Pittman said they began their elastic band creation at the start of the school year and while classmates were making their own rubber band designs, the super long big band was made entirely by Pitman and Roberts.
