Students took to the steps of the Vernon Court House Friday as part of a global call for action on the environment.
Kieran Grandbois, a Grade 10 WL Seaton student, said mass action must be taken now to save the planet.
“It's utterly ridiculous that we are going to destroy the future of millions because people at the very top of the system need to have more money lining their pockets,” said Grandbois.
“It's a fact that 71 per cent of carbon emissions are produced by just 100 industrial polluters, so this isn't something that requires individual action like recycling or car pooling, this is something that requires mass action on a mass scale.”
Grandbois said corporations and governments must be held accountable for the damage being done to the planet.
“We're trying to put an emphasize on local action with city and provincial governments first and after that we are focussing on the national government and international agreements such as the Paris Accord.
“We are the generation currently alive that has the most at stake, but the generation that truly has the most at stake is the one that has yet to be born. Their entire lives will be decided by our actions today.”
