City officials were given a snapshot of crime in the city for the last quarter of 2018.
Supt. Shawna Baher presented a report to council that showed a 19.5 per cent increase in criminal code violations for the last three months of the year, while property crime went up by 30.43 per cent.
Baher said a lot of that was because of some prolific offenders in the community, adding 11 of 16 prolific offenders are in custody and the others are being watched closely.
Baher said after the arrest of one particularly active prolific offender the number of theft from vehicle calls dropped noticeably.
She said police have been focussing on crime reduction for the past three years.
The good news is, Baher's report showed that overall in 2018 when compared to 2017, criminal code offences decreased by 0.1 per cent and property crime decreased 3.72 per cent.
“With regards to our road safe initiatives, road check-stops increased 30.43 per cent and we had a decrease of 11.9 per cent in alcohol-related traffic enforcement,” said Baher. “Moving forward, we will be reassessing our priorities and initiatives as we undergo our strategic planning for 2019-22.”
Bahar also told council the detachment has filled the six positions requested by the RCMP two years ago.
