Child voices of Watoto

A children's choir from Uganda is set to visit the Okanagan, with performances in Vernon, Summerland and Penticton.

The Watoto Children's Choir is on a six-month world tour, sharing the story of abandoned African children and vulnerable women.

The Watoto charity helps them rise above their circumstances, and over the past 35 years has placed thousands of orphans in families, empowered thousands of vulnerable women, rescued babies and former child soldiers, and sent children’s choirs across six continents.

The choir will sing its new album, We Will Go, Feb. 1 in Penticton at Bethel Church, Feb. 3, 10 a.m. in Vernon at The Landing Church, and at Summerland Baptist Church that evening.

Jackie, an 11-year-old member of the choir, was abandoned by her parents when she was only four.

“I heard that Canada is very cold," she said. "When I travel on the choir, I want to play in the snow. I dream of becoming a teacher when I grow up, so on tour, I will continue to help my friends with their homework. I also learned the Canadian anthem and I can’t wait to sing it there.”
