Neighbourhood going to pot

Trish Cory does not want to see her neighbourhood go to pot.

The Lumby resident has learned regional district officials will be supporting a plan to build 110,000-square-foot hemp facility next to property and she is not happy about it.

She said the regional district will be sending a letter of support to the Agricultural Land Commission recommending the farm land be used to process hemp.

Cory said regional district officials will be meeting this afternoon where they will look at a bylaw to allow cannabis facilities to be on any type of land in Cherryville and Lumby.

“We do have some issues with that bylaw,” said Cory adding she is also concerned about the Green Amber Project that would build a huge building with parking for 30 cars.

“It's going to be more of a production facility we are finding out. They will be growing some hemp plants from which they will be extracting some oil,” said Cory. “None of us around here have any problem with cannabis, but we do have problems with huge factories.”

Cory said a realtor told her having the facility next to her home will decrease the value by as much as $100,000.

She plans to be at the regional district office at 3 p.m. to protest the facility and will be at the meeting when it starts at 4 p.m.
