The future of Kal Lake Park

Just minutes out your back door is one of the most pristine provincial parks in British Columbia, and a plan to keep it that way is in the works.

A Kalamalka Lake Provincial Park draft management plan is available for the public.

"The management plan for Kalamalka Lake Park draws focussed attention on the significant role this park has in protecting sensitive foreshore areas of Kalamalka Lake along with an endangered grassland and open forest ecosystem.

The park also provides high-value recreational opportunities such as hiking, mountain biking, horse riding, rock climbing, bouldering, nature appreciation, boating and swimming. The management plan includes the following 19 key strategies.

Public comments will be accepted on the draft management plan until Jan. 31. *Please either fill out an online comment form or download the PDF comment form which can be mailed in.

BC Parks will be hosting a public information session in Vernon on the draft management plan on Monday, Dec. 10, at the Vernon Prestige Hotel from 4 to 8 p.m.

Key BC Parks staff will be on-hand to answer questions on the draft management plan. Participants are welcome to fill out/submit hard copy comment forms at the public information session.

"The park vision provides long-term direction for park managers, while aiding them in making decisions regarding current issues. It is based on prevailing environmental and socio-economic attitudes concerning protected areas. It is, however, dynamic and conceptual and therefore allows for change due to evolving ideas regarding conservation and recreation and evolving ecosystems due to climate changes," stated a provincial spokesperson.
