Sally Ann providing hope

Stefan Reid is helping provide hope amongst the devastation of Panama City, Fla. after Hurricane Michael tore through the area.

Reid is the lieutenant of the Vernon Salvation Army and he jumped at the opportunity to help out.

He's on the Salvation Army Incident Management team and they are patrolling devastated areas, providing food boxes, water, hygiene packs and other basic necessities.

He says the level of destruction he witnessed is beyond words.

“It's hard to describe. Certain areas of the city are completely destroyed while other areas are minorly affected, but we are in areas that are severely damaged with people sleeping under tarps where their homes used to stand,” said Reid, adding the situation is very impactful.

“Some days are difficult. We're down here providing the support that they need. It is a great opportunity to serve and give back to the communities of this area.”

The Salvation Army is known worldwide for helping those in need and Reid said he is honoured to be able to provide not only basic necessities, but emotional and spiritual care as well.

“It is something I am passionate about,” he said, adding people see hope when they see the Salvation Army arrive.

Hurricane Michael hit Florida with winds up to 155-mph, flattening buildings, tearing up roads and knocking out power to thousands.

Reid has been in Florida for the past two weeks and returns home Thursday.
