The Adams River migration

There is no shortage of amazing photographers in the North Okanagan. Castanet is fortunate to have many of them as readers of our site.

Every so often those photographers share their work with Castanet, as in the case of Gary Summer and his photos of the annual Adam’s River salmon run from earlier in the month.

Here's what Gary Summer wrote to Castanet.

"It is an amazing journey. Each year over two million people will come to the Adams River to watch the great event. This year about 15 million (salmon) are expected to make the journey some 500 km.

A female salmon will lay on average 4,000 eggs along the banks of the Adams River.

This is the end of her life cycle which began probably only meters away from where she first began her life as an egg.

Of the four thousand eggs, about 900 eggs hatch and journey toward the Shuswap Lake.

The journey takes them from the Shuswap Lake through the Fraser River to a  saltwater marine environment, and back once again to the Adams River.

It is a cycle of around four years. There are only two male or female salmon of the original 4000 eggs that will return to their birthplace.

Truly one of the wonder’s of the world."
