Lanterns light up Diwali

The days-long Diwali in Vernon Festival is underway and on Wednesday evening a lantern making session at the Vernon and District Performing Arts Centre.

More than 60 people showed up for the two sessions to create paper lanterns from bamboo frames and thin rice paper.

Lanterns could then be taken home or left on display at the gallery’s Diwali in Vernon Festival exhibit.

The festival started Tuesday and culminates with a final show at the Vernon & District Performing Arts Centre on Saturday, Oct. 13 at 7 p.m.

Rohit Chokhani, with Diwali in BC, said this year, the Diwali is being held in five cities.

“Vernon is one of our biggest expansion,” said Chokhani. “I can imagine it will only grow and get bigger. I think the message of Diwali is about unifying and we are in a world where there is a lot of divisiveness going on so I think the spirit of Diwali brings everyone together. It doesn't matter what your culture is or what your background is, it's just a celebration where we all come toget
