Tired tires retired

Hundreds of worn out tires are heading to a recycling depot thanks to Kal Tire Vernon.

People can drop off their tires until 3 p.m. today at the Kal Tire head office on Kal Lake Road during the 2018 Kal Tire Charity Garage Sale and Scrap Tire Round Up.

Kevin McCarty, with Kal Tire, said the tires will be shipped to a recycling facility through Tire Stewardship BC.

The tires are the broken down into crumb rubber.

“That crumb rubber is used in a variety of different things like the track in track and field, or under a playground – many playgrounds now have the rubber, bouncy surface. That's a common use, but it's also made into flooring, roofing shingles and a variety of construction and landscaping products,” said McCarty.

Tire roundups are held at Kal Tire locations across BC throughout the summer, but people can also bring their used tires to any Kal Tire location for recycling, but the rubber must be off the rim to be recycled.

On average between 80-90 per cent of the scrap tires collected are recycled into products.
