A vegan music festival

Chantelle Deacon

It might not be your typical summer music festival but this four-day event can guarantee you'll leave feeling better than when you showed up.

The first ever Great Canadian Fruit Festival from Aug. 10 to 13 at  Komasket Campgrounds just off Westside Road proved to be a huge success.

"We had over 200 people here," said Ted Carr, event founder and organizer. "We gathered here because we wanted to celebrate the fresh fruit of the Okanagan, community and healthy lifestyle in general."

The menu for the event was 100 percent raw fruits and vegetables. The Canada Fruit Fest is completely organic and they believe they are the only festival of their kind.

The majority of the fruit was sourced locally. Fruits like peaches, nectarines, melons and berries were available buffet style throughout the entire festival.

"It's human food, it's food we are naturally designed to eat. When you eat the food you are naturally designed to eat, you feel the way you are naturally designed to feel, which is really, really, good."

The music festival is alcohol and drug-free, which is meant to help spiritual and mental growth, says Carr.

"We get high on our natural supply," he said. "On the peaches, cherries and watermelons and on each other, the connection we have with one another," he also added that the live music is a huge asset to the festival.

"We had some really, really big acts and heavy hitters in the music scene and amazing dance parties just getting high on the live music."

People from all around the world participated in the first ever event and many hope this becomes a worldwide festival.

The event features artists from genres like folk, indie, pop, electro and house. Frase, Bombargo, Felix Zenger, IMUR were just a few of the performers who took the stage.

Carr says the festival will definitely be back again next year.
