Fat bike biz booming

Kalyn Webster quickly learned what it’s like to be a 22-year-old entrepreneur.

“It’s pretty amazing,” Webster said. “The last year has been pretty epic for me. When I first got into it, I figured it would be easy, and now I’m working every night until eight or nine o’clock and realize it’s not as easy as I thought, that’s for sure.”

The Vernon resident started Electric Fat Bike Company eight months ago, and business has been booming. It’s been so good, in fact, he’s waiting on the next shipment for his riders.

Fat bikes are off-road bicycles with oversized tires that make it easier to move on softer surfaces like sand, snow and mud. The attached battery on Webster’s fat bikes allows those who fall behind to catch up to the group.

“If you’re not a rock star and not out there training year round,” Webster said, “these bikes will allow you to get to those places you wouldn't normally go and have more fun doing it.”
