Lumby arsonist sentenced

A Lumby man will spend time in jail after unintentionally setting his parents' mobile home on fire on Sept. 1, 2017.

Trevor Luszcz, 33, sat in the courtroom on Monday with tears in his eyes while he recalled the incident.

The homeless man was living on his parents' deck outside their home when he chucked a cigarette butt which sparked a fire.

His parents' home was a complete loss. No one was inside the home located at Valleyview Mobile Home Park previously known as Trinity Valley Trailer Park on Mabel Lake Road in Lumby.

Provincial Court Judge Mark Takahashi sentenced Luszcz to 82 days in custody for arson by negligence, breach of undertaking or recognizance.

According to the Crown, Luszcz suffers from schizophrenia, adding that he is also addicted to drugs and alcohol.

Luszcz has also been given two years probation following his release.
