What's the buzz about?

Chantelle Deacon

A Vernon woman was greeted by a swarm of honeybees when she walked out the front door of her home on Saturday.

"I walked outside and I just heard this really loud buzzing noise and I'm like 'what is that?"' said Alexandra Bonsan, who came across the swarm of bees. "Then I looked up and my whole front yard, over top of the house, the trees, the yard, was just a swarm of thousands of honeybees."

Bonsan says it startled her at first but the bees weren't aggressive and didn't come anywhere near her while she walked to her vehicle.

After she left for work, her neighbours observed the swarm of honeybees for a little while longer.

"They looked up and on the tree, it was like a watermelon of all of them surrounding the queen bee," Bonsan said. "They stayed like that for an hour and then I guess they left."

"At first I wasn't sure if they were wasps so I just ran under them and ran into my car and they didn't even touch me."

With the weather getting warmer it's important to be cautious of bees in the area.

If you spot a swarm of bees it's important to keep your distance.

If the swarm doesn't leave on its own you can contact the North Okanagan Beekeepers and someone will come take it away.
