With this ring, I thee scam

A cautionary tale. Too good to be true. Buyer beware.

Any way you phrase it, a Vernon man was tricked into buying nothing more than costume jewelry.

Rod, who didn't want his last name used, had just finished visiting a friend in the Hamlets when he was approached by a clean, well-presented couple in a white SUV asking for help.

The couple told Rod they needed to sell some of their jewelry in order to pay for gas to get to Calgary.

"I knew something wasn't right," Rod said. "The price started too good to be true."

They told Rod that the ring was worth $700 to $800, but they would take $100.

"They were fairly well-dressed," he said. "And the lady even started with the crying."

Rod eventually talked the couple down to $25.

"The ring was stamped 18k and had a good weight to it," he said.

Rod has since taken the ring to two separate jewellers, and it is not real at all.

Rod's not mad, he just wanted to share his story so others are aware of the scam.

He has contacted the RCMP.
