Slide cause determined

Tuesday's landslide that blocked Eastside Road and heavily damaged a nearby property most likely occurred as a result of saturated ground conditions on a steep embankment.

The City of Vernon released the finding from a geotechnical engineering report Friday.

"From his perspective, it was likely a combination of groundwater and surface water that saturated the soil," said James Rice, manager of public works with the City of Vernon.

"The slide is stable at this point, and our intention is that when we have finished the work it will be permanently stable at this location."

The City is currently preparing a plan to permanently stabilize and repair the embankment, with work likely occurring within the next four to six weeks.

"At this point, we are moving into the detailed design phase of what that repair really looks like. Chances are it won't be a retaining wall, it is going to be establishing the existing slope with a more granular material, something that is more structural," said Rice.

The debris covering the road has been removed, but the property impacted is still partially buried.

City crews will continue to monitor roadside ditches and culverts in the area to ensure the drainage systems are functional.

A culvert at the top of the embankment created some speculation as a possible cause. However, Rice says it has been in use since before the City of Vernon took over the responsibility of the Okanagan Landing.

"The culvert obviously is located at this location and was discharging water in this area. Having said that, it had been doing that, looking at our records, since the late seventies," said Rice. "There were no changes that had taken place that would indicate that would be a problem."

Larry Gilchuck and his wife were asleep when the wall of mud, rock and trees came barrelling towards their home early Tuesday morning.

The slide destroyed a section of their 20-foot retaining wall, buried his full-size GMC work truck and trailer, dented a shipping container, and tossed a car into their home, just metres from where they lay sleeping.

The couple is trying to find answers as they struggle with the cleanup.
