Standoff suspect ID'd

The 33-year-old man at the centre of a 15-hour long standoff with police has made his first appearance in court.

Kelly Blake Torvik is facing a number of charges in relation to the standoff in Coldstream including, but not limited to: assault; assault with a weapon; uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm; pointing a firearm; and possessing a firearm without a licence or registration.

In court documents, it is alleged that Torvik assaulted a woman, threatened to use a weapon on that woman, threatened to cause death or bodily harm to the woman, threatened to cause death or bodily harm to police, pointed a firearm at the woman, and used an SKS rifle while committing, attempting to commit, or during the flight after committing or attempting to commit, the indictable offence of assault.

According to Court Services Online, a man with the name Kelly Blake Torvik has a long history of criminal offences that date back to 2005 that range from open liquor in a motor vehicle to assault.

Torvik will remain in custody. He is scheduled to be back in court Feb. 15.
