Little kid, big heart

A lot of adults could learn from Alex Mulder.

At just eight years old, Alex has already made two videos to help the Upper Room Mission's Coldest Night of the Year annual fundraiser.

“I made one last year and it got a lot of donations,” said Alex, adding he raised $1,345 for the mission and he is raising more money this year.

Presented by the Bannister Automotive Group, the walk takes place on the evening of Saturday, Feb. 24.

Lisa Anderson, URM co-executive director, said thousands of participants will be taking part in the walk in more than 100 cities across Canada.

“By walking together in the chill of the night, participants will better understand the experience of being on the streets during a cold Canadian winter,” said Anderson.

Participants pay the $25 registration fee - which increases to $40 after Feb. 19 - or they can waive the fee and raise a minimum of $150, $75 for youth ages 11-17 years.

Alex said he is “very” excited to be taking part in the event again this year.

“I'm doing it to help the homeless,” said Alex, who has also volunteered several times at the Vernon mission.

Alex's dad, Wilf, said his son likes to be involved in things.

“It's something that he enjoys doing, but I think equally it is very eye opening,” said Wilf.

Added Alex, “It's not something they force me to do. I like doing it.”

Anderson said they also need about 25 more volunteers.

The Vernon walk begins and ends at the Vernon Elks Lodge No. 45, 3103-30th St., where walkers will register, turn in the results of their fundraising efforts, and return at the end of the evening for a warm celebration meal.

This is the Upper Room Mission's 6th year taking part in the Coldest Night of the Year, and the fundraising target is $50,000.

The money will go toward the 2018 food budget and will help feed the less fortunate in the city.

In 2017, the mission served 90,000 hot meals to those in need.

The Healthy Snack Program also assisted more than 500 local school-aged children and youth with nutritious food items throughout the school year.
