Cops confirm identity

RCMP have now confirmed the human remains located on a Silver Creek farm were those of 18-year-old Traci Genereaux and said her death is being treated as suspicious.

No charges have been laid in connection with Genereaux's death and an autopsy has been completed, but the results are not being released.

"Now that the identification has been confirmed, the RCMP are once again seeking the public's assistance in any information that can help advance the investigation into the disappearance and death of Traci Genereaux," said Cpl Dan Moskaluk.

The family was notified today along with all other families that have been publicly linked to the on-going investigation. 

"Given the size of the 24 acre property, the number of out buildings and various items at this location, additional resources and equipment have been brought in order to conduct a thorough search of this property in the most efficient manner," said Moskaluk.

Genereaux was last heard from in Vernon and RCMP are asking people with information about her activities leading up May 29 to contact them at 1-877-987-8477.

Police said Genereaux was four-foot-11, 95 lbs, had brown hair and blue eyes.

Family members have confirmed remains found on a farm near Silver Creek are those of 18-year-old Traci Genereaux.

Genereaux was last heard from on May 29.

Two weeks ago, police descended on a farm on Salmon River Road with dozens of officers and two mobile command trucks.

Police began searching the 24-acre property and soon focused on one corner of the farm, setting up large white tents and bringing in a forensics team.

Several days later, police confirmed human remains had been found.

The farm is associated with Curtis Wayne Sagmoen, who has been charged with six offences stemming from an Aug. 27 incident near Falkland. The charges include intentionally discharging a firearm and uttering threats to a sex trade worker.

Last week, police contacted Darcy Genereaux, Traci's father, and her mother, Laurie Nixon, to obtain a DNA sample.

“They got hold of us and said they needed DNA to send to the coroner to check against the remains found at Silver Creek to see if my baby girl has been found or not,” he said, his voice cracking.

Last December, the teenager broke her back in a car accident and went to her parents, telling them it was time to change her life.

“She had had enough of that garbage,” Genereaux said. “She was clean from December until the day she left.”

Police are also investigating the disappearance of four other missing women from the same area in the Shuswap.
