Landing needs bike lanes

Coun. Brian Quiring's call for bike lanes along Okanagan Landing Road is receiving support.

A local transportation group is cheering Vernon city councillor Brian Quiring's call for bike lanes in Okanagan Landing, from Paddlewheel Park to Ellison Provincial Park.

Quiring asked about the matter during a council meeting on Tuesday.

“There are quite a few blind corners,” said Quiring, who also complained about the road surface.

Transportation manager Amanda Watson said it would likely be five-plus years before there was major road rehabilitation along that route.

“That's too bad,” Quiring said. “I would like to see us revisit our plans for bike lanes.”

Quiring's call has the backing of the North Okanagan Coalition for Active Transportation.

“We support that,” said Kerry Carlson, NOCAT director. “It is a well-used corridor.”

Carlson said many people biked along the road despite the dangers, including the corners.

“It's terrible,” she said.

NOCAT will discuss Quiring's call at its next meeting.

“People like to bike out to Ellison Park....It would be a wonderful recreational corridor.”
