Fundraising for fire hall

Enderby city council has given its support to an ambitious fundraising campaign by the Enderby Fire Rescue Society.

The society hopes to raise $600,000 from the community to build a large bay at the south end of the fire hall and a turnout gear room.

The proposed bay would fit a larger ladder truck than what the hall has now.

“It'll fit a 40 by 100 ladder truck while right now we have bays that are 40 by 60,” said Enderby Fire Chief Cliff Vetter.

Vetter said the addition would also have a room for turnout gear.

“Right now, we can have up to 16 or 20 guys trying to suit up (for a fire) right next to the fire trucks,” explained Vetter. “We're bumping into each other and it's a safety factor with trucks trying to pull out at the same time.”

The fire chief said plans changed as the society looked at the future needs of the community.

“We were encouraged to look long term so we're looking to raise a little bit more money for the future needs of the hall and also of the community.”

The society is reaching out to businesses and the public, hoping to have 600 people/businesses donate $1,000.

“We realize a business may be able to donated $2,000 while a person may only be able to donate a few hundred."

For those interested in making a donation, Vetter said an account has been set up at the Enderby Credit Union called Enderby Fire Rescue Society. He said people can call him or city hall for a receipt that can be used for income tax purposes.
