Celebrating First Nations

Hundreds of area school children got a lesson in taking care of nature and local First Nation culture Wednesday.

As part of the ongoing RespectFEST events, the Allan Brooks Nature Centre held a variety of activities at Coldstream Park.

The children learned about the life cycle of kokanee, which spawn in the creek, how to care for the creek and the fish, and interwoven through it all was lessons on First Nation culture.

Aaron Deans, executive director with the ABNC, said along with celebrating Canada's 150 anniversary, RespectFEST acknowledges the “rich and varied history of the first people's of the region.

“The First Nation component to the curriculum is very big, and at this age its a good time for them to embrace and celebrate the varied history that goes back long before any of us non-First Nation people came to the area.”

RespectFEST continues through Sunday with a variety of events. A full list of events, times and places can be found online.
