Meeting on water woes

After more than two years of lobbying, letters and meetings, Al Price is hopeful things are finally moving in the right direction for a group of Spallumcheen residents.

Price is the chairperson of the Save Hullcar Aquifer Team (SHAT) which has been trying to get the Province to take action and resolve an ongoing water issue.

It was in March 2014, Spallumcheen residents who draw their water from the aquifer were put on a water advisory due to high nitrate levels believed to be caused by nearby agricultural activities.

On Aug. 24/25, Price and other members of SHAT will have a face-to-face meeting with NDP Environment Assistant Deputy Minister Jennifer McGuire to discuss the ongoing issue.

Price said McGuire has a list of questions for the group and he hopes this will mark a progression in solving the issue.

“I'm looking forward to the review for sure, and this is an integral part of it,” said Price of a government plan to review the aquifer. “We've been waiting a long time for some positive action.”

Price said he is he is cautiously optimistic the review will yield that action.

He said the change of government has made a difference.

“They are actually talking to us,” he said.

Price said he understands it will take a while for the new attitude of those at the top to trickle down to the rest of the department.

Price said the scope of the review will include;

  • a review of nutrient management practices across BC
  • review how other jurisdictions are approaching nutrient management
  • review of current and feasible waste management practices with specific attention to opportunities for composting, waste to energy such as bio-gas production, etc.
  • the focus is on the intensive cattle operation in Hullcar
  • the review will inform the in progress review of the Agricultural Waste Control Regulation and policy for the protection of drinking water by improved management of agricultural wastes
