Semi hits cow, then house

UPDATE: 2:30 p.m.

North Okanagan RCMP are investigating a collision which caused severe damage to a home along Highway 97A in Armstrong early Thursday morning after a semi hit a cow and then plowed into the house.

On July 20 at approximately 2 a.m., RCMP in Armstrong responded to a single vehicle collision involving a semi-truck pulling B-train trailers.

The incident occurred when the northbound truck struck a cow on the highway just north of Harding Road.

"The male driver of the truck lost control and crossed the opposing lanes, down and over the opposing side ditch, through a yard, then driving into a home on Hunter Avenue in Armstrong," said Cpl. Dan Moskaluk, RCMP spokesperson. "The house was heavily damaged and the truck driver was transported to hospital suffering from serious but non-life threatening injuries as a result. Luckily the homeowners who were in another part of the home were not injured."

ORIGINAL STORY: 8:25 a.m.

The driver of a semitrailer was taken to hospital early Thursday morning after hitting a cow on Highway 97A and losing control of his vehicle that crossed three traffic lanes, went down an embankment, through one yard and then smashed into a house on Hunter Avenue in Armstrong.

“We heard a huge bang,” said Cindy Marchand, whose property was extensively damaged in the accident. “My husband thought it was thunder to begin with.”

The couple got out of bed and moved into the next room to find out what had happened.

“As we went through I thought I could see a tree limb and then I could see the semi in our backyard...It had skidded through our neighbour's yard and hit the house.”

Damage is extensive, said Marchand.

The vehicle took out the neighbour's fence, and then wiped out the Marchands' back deck, as well as gabling on the house and the fire stack. The BBQ was thrown to the back of the yard.

“We have structural damage. Our walls are cracked. There's glass everywhere. We didn't realize the extent of the damage last night because it was dark.”

Despite the damage, the couple consider themselves lucky, especially as the cab of the big rig is sitting right outside their bedroom wall where drywall has come off and the baseboards have cracked.

“I am thankful we are fine,” said Marchand. “Our neighbours are fine and the driver's going to be okay.”
